Pitch your shelter for the conditions
The sidewalls let you adapt to the weather and landscape.
In good weather, or in sheltered campsites, pitching the the shelter with sidewalls standing increases the interior space. The vertical sidewalls allow people to sleep right up to the edge of the shelter.
When a modular shelter is pitched with the sidewalls standing, the sidewalls can be rolled up. Here the sidewall poles are left standing in position, to improve stability. If the weather changes, simply roll the sidewalls down and fasten.
In rainy or cold weather, pitching the shelter with the sidewalls inside provides extra protection against drafts, and water running along the ground. It reduces the height and improves stability of the shelter in high winds.
With the sidewalls outside, snow, sand or rocks can be used to stabilize the shelter. For example, use in a rocky river valley where pegs cannot easily be placed. This technique makes the shelter incredibly wind resistant.
